SJCAM Camera Official Site: http://sjcam.com/

Oh man, has SJCAM got news for you!
This is going to be a pretty long one, as what I am about to tell you will show how a Chinese company intends to jump into its next phase of products and seal its rank among the big guns.
We’ll talk about what the title says.
The upcoming dual-screen native-4K/60fps SJ8 PRO.
It is the newest action camera that SJCAM will use to shake up the market, yet again.
But first, the feature list:
  • Ambarella H22S85
  • SONY IMX377
  • 4K @60fps/ 1080p @120fps
  • 12MP Photos
  • 30M Water Resistant IP68 in Waterproof Case
  • 8x Zoom
  • 7G Aspherical Lens
  • WiFi 2.4/5.8gGHz
  • H.264/H.265
  • 1200mAh Battery
  • Dual Stereo Microphones
  • Cloud Storage
  • Gyro Stabilization
  • IPS 2.33″ IPS LCD Touchscreen
  • 0.96″ Front Screen
  • Voice Control
SJCAM has been hard at work with this new souped-up camera, an amalgamation of all the strong points of the SJ6 Legend and the SJ7 Star, minus all the hiccups.
AMBARELLA Logo.PNGWith an Ambarella H22S85 System-on-Chip sitting mighty on the main board’s throne, this powerhouse of a chipset is capable of encoding in both H.264 (AVC) and the more recent H.265 (10-bit HEVC-10). What’s more is that it is driven by a Quad-Core ARM® Cortex-A53 for advanced analytics.
Yea, but what does it all mean? It means the SJ8 Pro will have plenty of room for great advancements and capabilities. It’s like growing an extra pair of arms and legs to use for work.
It also means 4K recording is just a regular task for the SJ8 Pro, as now it can easily do 60 fps. That’s twice the framerate of what the SJ7 can!
And on 1080p resolution, it can do 120 frames per second, a piece of cake.
SONY Logo.PNGMatched with a Sony IMX377 sensor, this makes the usage of the muscle-chipset worthwhile, as this is where the humongous 4K feed will come from.
7G glass.PNGThe 7-layer aspherical Glass lenses make sure that images fed into the sensor are free from what is commonly called “aberrations” and other such visual abnormalities.
1200 mAh batt.PNGThere are plenty that this thing will be boasting about, the 1200mAh battery will surely be enough to power the SJ8 Pro for well more than an hour of recording, and possibly a lot more at lower resolutions.
If you look at the specifications list, you will see Dual Stereo Microphones which could very well be intended for the rumored noise-cancellation other than just for Stereoscopic audio (left and right), which is also a first in the SJCAM action camera line, again we’ll see how this goes upon the release, roughly set towards the end of January or early February 2018.
1511876870.pngI was informed that the bigger and remarkably wider 2.33-inch touchscreen is not just an IPS display (In-Plane Switching), but also packs a helluva lot more pixels-per-inch and looks very much like the screens of the top 2 phone maker’s flagship phones. What’s even crazier is that the interface is a lot more fluid and several generations ahead in response time than previous touchscreen models. This is one camera to beat.
SJ8 front LCD.PNGAnd like the SJ6 Legend, the SJ8 Pro will have a front LCD screen, albeit small for 0.96 inches, is useful when setting the camera down on a tripod or amount so you can see what’s happening while controlling it with the SJRemote.
This camera, like with any other SJCAM action camera, will use a waterproof case for diving up to 30 Meters below the surface of the water. There’s also 8x digital zoom in the specs, but any camera enthusiast worth his salt knows that magnifying an image digitally is nothing more than just cropping the image and presenting it to you at full screen.
4K EIS.PNGWhat’s exciting to find out is the new gyro stabilization (aka EIS). It will most highly likely be up to 4K @30fps so rounding out the bumps in real-time video recording at that level will be a feat in itself, but we’ll soon see how that will be implemented.
But wait! There’s more! The SJ8 Pro will be using USB-C for many purposes. Expect faster data transfers, better FPV/drone control, and even live-preview, all in just one micro port.
Of course, like the previous model-series releases, RAW and Distortion Correction will be there too, only faster and processed more efficiently.
And just before I wrap this up, I know you’re asking what that cloud storage and voice control in the feature list are about. Not mentioned in there, too, is the much-rumored GPS. I guess we’ll have to wait until we get some more info on that. Stay tuned and also check out the News Pages on the Official SJCAM Website.
Oh and, there will be 2 other variants of the SJ8: SJ8 Air and SJ8 Plus.
The Air model will utilize a Novatek NT96658 chipset matched to a Panasonic MN34110PA sensor, and like in the SJ6 series, will not have the front screen; while the Plus model is rumored to use a Novatek NT96683 and matched to a Sony IMX117. Those are absolutely solid combos, but will still place the SJ8 Pro model way ahead of the pack. We truly are seeing better and better specs from SJCAM and it seems they are on a roll and gaining on the competition. We’ll see how this goes.
Meanwhile, get your wallet ready. You already know you want this.
I hear there’s chatter in the community forums as well, so take a peek in there or join in the discussions.
That’s it for now, until the next update.

This camera comes with very few accessories. In its box, we won’t find any waterproof case, nor any particular mount because, as I said before, it’s not exactly an action cam we are used to reviewing on this site.
So we will find only the strictly necessary:
  • 1 x SJ360+
  • 1 x Manual
  • 1x Manual for the software
  • 1 x Mini Tripod
  • 1 x Cloth Bag
  • 1 x Hand Strap
  • 1 x USB Data / Charging Cable
  • 1 x Lens Cleaning Cloth

This is also one of those refreshing cases where a tripod is right in there with the camera – very useful to shoot perfectly stable videos or photos. It is well built, and it seems really strong. Another good feature is the cloth carrying bag. It is a must, as it enables you to carry the camera without ruining the lenses.

Design and Build Quality

This camera is not made for using on a bike, neither on a boat nor underwater! One just runs it like any other normal camera: in your hands. In fact, the shape suggests the one-handed use. The anti-slip textured plastic makes it easier and safer to grip.
The cam features a clean, simple stick with two buttons, two lenses and one little screen.
One button is located in the middle of the camera, naturally accessible with your thumb. Its function is just “Select” and “Start” recording, or “Shoot” a photo.
SJCAM SJ360 Plus Photo 3 Front
The other button is located on the left side of the camera. Its functions are to “Power On / Off”, and to navigate various Menus and Settings. Both buttons are backlighted – and it is a beautiful, and very useful thing!
The tiny screen is well made as it is very bright and perfectly visible in every situation.
The only thing I find quizzical is the place chosen for the SD card:
SJCAM SJ360 Plus Photo 4
I can’t quite grasp why they had to put the SD card behind the battery! To access the card you are forced to dismantle half of the camera and it’s just… hm. Technology reasons? Hardly believable. One thing speaks for this though: when you are removing the SD card, the camera is sure to be Off…

Menu Overview

The Menu on this camera is very simple. It hasn’t an awful lot of choices, and everything is clear.
The Menu begins, as always, with the fast modes:
  1. Video mode
  2. Photo mode
  3. Wifi – On/Off
  4. Settings
The Settings section is composed of:
  • Language – English/Chinese/Japanese/French/Spanish/Italian/Portuguese/German/Polski/
  • Video Resolution – 1920×960 / 1472×736 / 960×480
  • Loop Recording – Off / 1min / 3min / 5min
  • Record Audio – On / Off
  • Photo Resolution – 5M / 3M
  • Key Tone – On / Off
  • Auto Sleep – Off / 1min / 3min / 5min
  • Format
  • Reset Camera – Yes / No
  • Version – v0.6
  • Quit
sjcam sj360 plus menu
See? There is not much to explain, this camera has just a few settings, nothing peculiar about it!

Video Quality

First I want to say that this camera has good colors and works really good in different lighting conditions. It can manage everything greatly, though the quality of the video is not exactly fantastic. As I’ve said in other reviews, 1080p is not enough resolution to reach good quality.
I also have to say that there is a lot of difference between the videos just out of the SJCAM program and the videos uploaded on Youtube, because this one uses very strong compression… and a lot of compression ditches a lot of data.

Photo Quality

The quality of the photos is a little bit better than the video, but only because another compression process is used for the photos, so there is a smaller loss of data. Personally I think that 360° photos are among the most interesting and immersive things these days, because with just one click you can show and share the ENTIRE view all around you without cuts or narrow panoramas!

Audio Quality

The quality of the audio is good. Not super sensitive, but it allows you to hear everything. No problems!

This is the first time I find a dedicated software for a 360° camera. Fortunately, SJCAM thought it could be useful to use software to edit this kind of videos. However, it’s nothing new as I have already used it before. For it is exactly the same software I recommended to you when I reviewed the Andoer A360l. They just re-branded it.
But then… why not, if it works?
Basically the program allows you to perform some straight editing, like cutting the clips and choosing the quality. If you want to do anything more complex, you want to first render your recording with this program and after that, you can import the results into any program you prefer (I usually use After Effects). The final step is to inject the metadata with this last program.

WiFi and App

As already known, SJCAM can develop a good App with a good WiFi quality. Both are perfectly stable and immediately ready for use. This App is very intuitive, and the camera responds great – within 10 meters.
I’ve had a beautiful day’s walk in the city of Bologna. When I came home, I had in mind to share my 360° photos taken with the Sj360+. I turned on the WiFi and transferred some photos to my phone. And then I found that, once uploaded, the images were not really 360°! So I tried the same thing via PC but again – nothing. The results were something like this:
sjcam sj360 software 2
Two image circles next to each other. I don’t need to point out how I was quite frustrated and worried. After several minutes of discouragement I found the button “Share” into the appand… it worked!
sjcam sj360 plus share
This is the fastest way to share real 360° photos with your socials!

Battery life

These are the results of my battery tests:
  • 1920×960 – 154 minutes (7,8 Gb)
  • 1472×736 – 147 minutes (6,7Gb)
  • 960×480 – 180 minutes (6,7Gb)
  • Recharging time – about 3 and a half hours
This camera has so much battery life! I can’t hide it: sometimes I plain forget the camera is still recording…

This camera is perfect if you want to experiment with the 360° technology. It is easy to use, and you can have good results with a minimum of effort. It is well built, and it arrives with just a few, but proper accessories.
The only flaw with these kinds of cameras is their relatively low resolution but you can’t really ask for more, considering the price. For more info about this product, visit SJCAM official website http://sjcam.com/
